The Great Escape placed you as a POW"'"in a converted castle with the"'"sole task of escaping by"'"any means possible. There"'"were no guns or deaths,"'"your fate would consist of"'"losing the will to escape and"'"becoming a living zombie."'"Heavy psychiatry for a"'"computer game!" 1 ;"{L9881 I have this fantasy... no, not the one"'"involving David Gedge and the egg salad,"'"that one's private and very rude."'"I would love to travel back in time to"'"1983 with a copy of R-type in my"'"pocket. Then I would release it and the"'"Speccy world would go MENTAL!"'"The Speccy can't do that they would"'"shout! and that is what Ultimate did"'"with Knight Lore. They wrote it in 1986"'"and travelled back in time two years." 1 ;"{L9881 Firstly, I'd like to thank Dave and"'"the darling Amanda for letting me"'"write for their tapezine. I did have some gardening to do"'"but that can wait. I'm writing this new feature because my"'"graphic was so easy to grab from my CDS football game"'"but that's their story. Now then, its very nearly spring-time and all things need a good old fashioned deep clean to keep your whatevers working properly." 1 ;"you wouldn't have been blinded with vibrant hues but it does have a very useful built-in tape meter."; 1 ;"just how!" 1 ;"from a magazine and the year is 1983 so you have been warned. To the best of my knowledge there"'"never was a Planet of the Apes game which is a"'"shame because I quite fancy Galon. Look through that big list in the last YS if you fancy a bit of research. But give Highlander a very wide berth." 1 ;"Young Man!" 1 ;"You wouldn't believe the amount of keyboard membranes the lad Nigel used to get through as he thrashed away at >": 1 ;"You could risk the hoover over the rest of the inner case"'"although you'll probably wipe the Z80 clean and knock off"'"several resisters at the swish of a mis-judged pass so eh,"'"DON'T basically. Put it all back together and hey presto, it will work just like it did before but you'll feel all warm and"'"cosy because the dirt is'nt there anymore. Unless you are"'"Stuart Pearce of course and have forgotten to put the"'"ribbon strips back in the slots." 1 ;"With code this"'"good the sequel"'"followed 2 years"'"later, this time"'"set in the"'"dinosaur age."; 1 ;"We've been struggling to aquire a QL in the last few weeks. We always seem to be seconds too late when ringing up ads. I reckon we've got a rival in Nottingham and I'm going to"'"break his/her legs when I catch up with them. And while I'm on that subject maybe someone out there would like to sell me a Sam Coupe, a Speccy +3 and a ZX81. I'm only a dole-"'"girl at the moment but I don't mind going without food if it means I can get my hands on these sexputers." 1 ;"WHERE TIME"; 1 ;"WEST BRIDGFORD"; 1 ;"Unless you were into Spectrums then you"'"just cannot imagine the fuss this game"'"kicked up. It came out of nowhere with a"'"brilliant new programming technique already"'"tackled by Sandy White of Ant Attack fame. Sadly this"'"game isn't a classic due to an awkward control system."''"The game itself is one of exploring a castle and collecting"'"potions to put in a wizards pot, overcoming traps, puzzles"'"and weird yet cute creations along the way.": 1 ;"The title tune is a beeped melody"'"of war-time ditties which doesn't quite"'"set the mood as they sound so comical."'"The game itself is so depressing! As you roam around the"'"austere castle in lovely monochrome isometric 3D you start"'"to get bad oppression vibes big time. At first the guards"'"leave you alone but will become more suss each passing day.": 1 ;"The SHARP MZ 711 is probably the most pro-looking kit of the bunch; a snazzy layout and bolt on tape and printer"'"gave it an officious style. Languages have to be loaded in"'"from boot-up which could either be seen as a hindrance or a boon. Not very sexy this one but it has its fans." 1 ;"The COLOUR GENIE is a sturdy but cheap looking computer boasting probably the worst joysticks ever designed. In a"'"drunken haze you could attempt to ring your mother on one"'"or even worse, try to play a game with it. Despite its name": 1 ;"STOOD STILL": 1 ;"Remove the back plate by either bending back the tabs (48K) or removing the screws and then just have a gander at all"'"that yuck and cack! It's like someone has been shoving it"'"down when you were out making the tea. Or something. >": 1 ;"Objects can be found in a number of places (always the"'"dangerous places!) my favourite being the German uniform"'"you can wear and roam quite freely in. A cache for your"'"goodies is essential to avoid them being found. The tunnel"'"systems under the camp really do need a torch to navigate and you'll need that shovel too for cave-ins. Simply let the game run and your fat bottomed sprite will go about his"'"business. This is useful for timing the guards set patrols." 1 ;"Now, don't go stampeeding for that can of Mr.Sheen or the damp sponge. You use ANYTHING moist and your Speccy is going to suffer for the rest of its life (which won't be very"'"long I can tell you!) Gently wipe away the filth with a clean dry cloth. If you do encounter that dried blob of ribena"'"then it's best left rather than scrub at it with wire wool."'"This is your Speccy with its sensitive belly bits out so treat"'"it with tenderness. Then again don't be afraid to dig about in your Speccy." 1 ;"Now that we are featured on POWER PD's cover tape we"'"can stop trying to be a complete magazine with masses of"'"different features and just concentrate on being a collectors"'"irreverent handbook type of thing. You wanted more reviews than anything else so here you are! Memory permitting we'll still slip in the odd weird section." 1 ;"Not only was the game"'"beautiful to look at, it"'"was also difficult to"'"play, ensuring top value"'"for money. Ultimates delicious packaging and the air of"'"mystery they created as faceless bods from Ashby-De-La-"'"Zouch was a blast of fresh air through the mainly 2D Manic Miner clones of the time. But the really impressive thing"'"about Knight Lore is you can load this game tomorrow and it still wouldn't look dated. I think they came from space..." 1 ;"Next issue I'll show you how to drink yourself stupid and"'"still manage a thumbs up to the Trent End. And a bit about tape decks, heads and software care!" 1 ;"NOTTINGHAM NG2 5DL" 1 ;"Moving onto the slightly faster Z80a's we have the Japanese SORD M5, a speccy look-a-like in a delicious two tone grey"'"livery. It has single keyword entry and a Centronics port"'"(everyone go Woooo!) but a 4K standard RAM lets it down.": 1 ;"Mattel are good at making toys and with THE AQUARIUS,"'"had a good stab at making computers too. It was certainly cheap at `50, boasting colour and a Spec-equalling 3.5 Mhz"'"clock speed but expanders were needed to make it actually"'"do anything half useful. The printer is pretty cute though." 1 ;"Match Day on the rubber keyed Speccy I'd bought him one"'"Xmas. If only I'd known that an annual internal might well"'"have solved the problem. It gets clogged up with dust, hairs,"'"crumbs and the odd gin and tonic spillage you know. I once spent several hours trying to removing a layer of sticky"'"Tennents Super I had clumsily dropped onto the keyboard"'"whilst playing Rolands Rat race. Great game that." 1 ;"Looks do matter y'know. If our Speccy had looked like that"'"lard arsed C64 I might never have bought one. But if I were a computer I'd like to look like the MEMOTECH MTX 512 -"'"sleek, dark and a trifle sexy. Well that's me anyway and all"'"girls with glasses and short hair can write to me now..."'"Running at a monster 4 Mhz and with a user language that"'"called itself NODDY, how could you not fall for its charms?"'"A built-in Dis/assembler puts the cherry on top really." 1 ;"It looks like a white ZX81 with rubber keys that don't work properly and yes it has that charm & eccentric indiviuality"'"that we (hopefully) all love from our chosen breed." 1 ;"I've yet to have a go at the AMSTRAD CPC 464 but it's"'"obvious where the +2 gained its handsome looks. I'm sure"'"we'll deal with Amstrad more fully in a future issue..."'"and I've left the best till last. The most collectable computer by the Sinclair junkies is the JUPITER ACE. Amanda swoons and Claire dribbles, the Ace is truely ace! Designed by the"'"Speccy team to be more of a hobbiest device, the Ace had"'"Forth instead of Basic and a B/W video output." 1 ;"I've managed to escape several times mainly going through"'"the wire and then filling my pants as I'm recaptured owing"'"to bad planning. However the game never gets boring as"'"there are obviously several different ways out. Someone"'"please write and tell me"; 1 ;"I'd like to start a competition page but what with this"'"tapezine being distributed by various PD libraries all over"'"Europe it would probably be unfair to those who will receive this issue sometime in 1997! So tell you what, the person who writes from farthest away can have a copy of ELITE 48K." 1 ;"I just wish we could put out two issues that were more or"'"less standard, Dave keeps changing things right under my"'"very nose. Stil 1 ;"ESCAPE"; 1 ;"Different languages can be plugged in with carts and some"'"of the earliest joypads were standard. An interesting beast this but pretty rare."; 1 ;"After removing the screws in the base of your Speccy, be"'"very careful as the two halves are still joined by a couple of very delicate keyboard strips. If you knacker these you really will need a new membrane so go easy young man! The first"'"48K is easy but look out for the others with the built in"'"tilters. It took me the best part of two weeks trying to"'"work out how to put the little leg bits back in place (and I'm not stupid, I just forgot to buy a goal-scorer in time)." 1 ;"(8) Classified Ads" 1 ;"(6) The Feature"; 1 ;"(4) Readers Top 10"; 1 ;"(2) Classic Software"; 1 ;"(1) Classic Software"'"(3) Letters Page"'"(5) Amandas Diary"'"(7) Cloughies Clinic"'"(9) Save Tapezine"; 1 23638-82": 1 23637+256* 1 *5jUjUjUjU*5 1 ((/'2(0807??<($08(. 1 (Daniel, Preston)"
